Reaktor will always be amazing of course, and it's worth having if not for access to the vast User Library, and I kind of like Rounds, but apart from that they haven't done anything truly impressive for a long time.Do you love Electronic Dance Music? Eager to learn how to make EDM? They don't seem to be interested in coming up with any new "workhorse" products, the kind of thing you'd drop into every track because it's so versatile and flexible.

They're leaning toward novelty stuff that piques your interest at first but then you realize you probably won't use it much. On the whole, I think NI has turned a corner that I don't like. Una Corda? Interesting, interesting.but then again, it's one of those things that you'd probably use once, if that, and then never touch it again. Of course they have the obligatory "ethnic" library (Indian) which is probably great if you're looking to impart an Indian vibe into your music, but how often do you do that? Then they have a strummed acoustic guitar library which again is quite limited unless you're just after some basic strumming, and it made me realize that I can record guitar that sounds much better myself.

As for the sample content, well you have their "Symphony essentials" which are extremely pared down versions of the full symphony libraries, are of limited use and don't sound all that good compared to other orchestral libraries I've heard. You'd think they'd introduce some new compressors, some new EQ's, maybe some cool mix tools, but no. There is nothing new in the way of effects. I know presets aren't everything, but they do give you an overview of the overall sound, and I wasn't that impressed. I took a run through the presets of Form and Flesh and thought ho hum, here we go again. Flesh is very Tim Exile, it has that similar sound that all of his stuff has. Lots of generic sound effect kind of stuff. And when you look at the overall content of Komplete and Ultimate, it seems clear that they're trying to appeal to the film scoring crowd. Everything is either plastic or metallic sounding. I've noticed NI leaning toward a very distinctive kind of sound over the last couple of years.

Stuff like Form and Flesh might be interesting, but from a musical perspective they're of limited use. They seem to have given up making flexible, multi-purpose synths like Massive in favor of plastic sounding synths that are more like convoluted science projects. Native Instruments has really jumped the shark over the last year or so.

Really, the only thing I'm happy about is the upgrade to Reaktor 6 - Blocks is excellent. Even though I got the upgrade on sale, I still kind of regret it. I've owned every version of Komplete Ultimate since version 8 and I have to say, the upgrade from 10 to 11 has to count as the most disappointing.
